Room air is drawn into oxygen concentrators, which then filters out nitrogen. The mechanism generates the higher oxygen levels required for oxygen therapy. Concentrators can be large and permanent or small and portable. Concentrators, as opposed to tanks or other oxygen-supply containers, use electrical pumps to concentrate a continuous supply of oxygen from the surrounding air.
